Playa de Los Muertos Located on the south side, it's a great place to hang out with several restaurants and bridges overlooking the sea. A popular spot to watch the sun set is Langostinos our romantic seafood directly on Los Muertos beach.
Playa Mismaloya If you're a movie buff, this is the place for you. This was the set for John Huston's movie Night of the Iguana with Richard Burton and Eva Gardner. The beach is located south on the highway towards Manzanillo past Hotel Camino Real.
Punta de Mita - El Anclote Beach Favored among surfers for its legendary waves, these beaches are ideal settings for swimming and surfing. The Four Seasons Resort now occupies the actual point, but the last beach before the resort, El Anclote, is one one the nicest beaches in the bay..Transportes Medina (222-4732) has an hourly shuttle for 15 pesos. It runs between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM, Monday through Saturday.
Las Animas, Quimixto and Yelapa These beaches can only be reached if you take one of the day cruises that leave from the Marina district or a water taxi. The cheapest way to get there is to go to Boca de Tomatlan via Bus or Taxi and then use a water taxi. Check the taxi prices before agreeing upon anything. The water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan usually costs around $50 pesos to Yelapa - the furthest beach. Las Animas and Quimixto are similar with their long beaches and palapas; although Quimixto has a small waterfall about an hour from the beach by foot or half-hour away on a rented mule. Yelapa is a wonderful secluded fishing village; it also has a waterfall. There is a nice hotel and several rentals should you wish to stay overnight. The last water taxi back is about 5pm.
Boca de Tomatlan: A very nice beach located south of Puerto Vallarta on the highway towards El Tuito, past Mismaloya. It has a few restaurants -- a good place to catch a water taxi to one of the south beaches.
Playa Destiladeras is ideal for smaller children, the bottom doesn't drop as quickly as at other beaches. To get there, take the Bus "Punta de Mita" and ask the driver to let you off at “Destiladeras”.
